Reconnecting with the Light: Reflections on our time on the Isle of Iona
Isle of Iona, Scotland
We explored on the Isle of Iona, the Hill of the Angels on the Atlantic side of the island. It sits on the edge of the Machair, which in Gaelic means, raised beach. It is a place of extraordinary light. Sunset produces a glory of brilliance. In May there is a carpet of crimson. Tipped Daisies and shining yellow Buttercups. It is a wonder filled land of light. It is said that in the sixth century this is where St. Columba would come and pray each day at sunset. He would perch at the top of the Hillock beside the Machair and gaze out to the west as the sun dipped into the ocean. It is said that St. Columba came to pray at this place and as he did angels of light could be seen ascending and descending all around the saint. The place came to be known as the Hill of Angels.
