C O M M U N I T Y A R T

We love to share our creative energies and make art with others. We bring the same spirit and practices in which we create our personal work, to our community art. We seek to Engage + Inspire + Create in the communities where that art will live. We trust that creativity, divinely embedded in the human spirit, is always within reach. Coming together to paint a mural or canvas draws out the spirit that connects us. We create something together that could not be created alone.

Artist’s Statement
The Lutheran World Federation has asked us to create a Creation Prayer Canvas for its Thirteenth Assembly. The canvas will be part of welcoming delegates to the Polish city of Kraków. Delegates from many nations will gather around our communal prayer canvas, becoming a focal point for vesper services. The design reflects Poland’s rich cultural heritage. Earth Banners Project

Gathering for Celebration

Artist’s Statement
Our community project began while living at Holden Village in the remote wilderness. The four-piece banner project is intended to be used, along with our Earth Prayer Canvas in a vesper gathering. The concept evolved from experiencing the Wolverine Fire and the resurrection of the forest. People are invited to stich on the banner.

Belfast Mural Projects

Genesis + Art
University of Kansas School of Design

Belfast Mural Project Statement
Genesis+Art was commissioned to create several street murals for the Skainos Project in East Belfast, Northern Ireland. The project explored and developed street mural designs for the community of Ballymac and the Short Strand. As an Adjunct Professor of Art and Design at the University of Kansas, we worked with senior design students to engage the community with artistic participation as a means to building relationships and positive social change. In creating together as a community, there is a respect for the mural as evidence that art works for restoration and reconciliation. The art engaged, inspired and offered a way to create community in the painting of the mural.

Creation Prayer Canvas Projects

Artist Statement
For us, there is no separation between our art and spiritual life. This collaborative, narrative, visual process is both community building in the making of the canvas as well as the gathering for an evening vesper service around the canvas. Prayers are offered by individually placing candles on the world for the healing of the earth and its people through, word, silence, and light.

India Project

Gathering for Celebration

Artist Statement
In observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and the celebration of the Indian Thanksgiving and Hindu Harvest Festival Pongal, we created, together with the people of  Tiruvannamalai, India a Creation Prayer Canvas. Spiritual pilgrims from over 20 nations gathered to create our communal prayer canvas that later became the focal point for a Taizé style vesper service. The creative experience overcame language barriers through visual, indigenous music and rituals. The design of our interfaith piece of art incorporated symbols from Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim traditions.
